katie rose
journalist. listener. storyteller.
Hey there! I'm a Pennsylvania native currently based in York.
For nearly two years, I've covered local government for The York Dispatch,
a 150-year-old newspaper that sadly won't see
another birthday.
I'm open to full-time and freelance job opportunities where I can leverage my creative and analytical skills to not just make a living – but make a difference to diverse audiences by calling attention to issues that matter in our communities.

who am i?
autobiography (abridged version):
A sense of childlike wonder abounds inside me.
School reports from my elementary days describe me as an inquisitive, meticulous and thoughtful pupil.
For as many times "foresight" also appeared in those reports, the total math nerd in me couldn't have predicted a career in journalism. Not even when I got my "start" creating a newspaper in Mrs. Wallace's gifted class (shoutout!).
Life has taken me on unexpected twists and turns since then, but I never lost those qualities – and they've served me well, from college at Bloomsburg University and my first job in morning television to reporting for an
award-winning newspaper.
I really bring enthusiasm to everything I do. Outside of work, I seek out adventure and new experiences whenever I can. That's led me to amass many hobbies, such as pottery, learning foreign languages, studying philosophy and training for what very well may be a pipe dream of completing a triathlon.
But hey, you don't know until you try, right?
Curiosity hasn't killed this cat(herine) yet.

what i can do
report responsibly
Journalism is essential to holding those in power accountable, whether that's a municipal body or a federal official. I fight to uncover the truth and don't shy away from tough questions.
I believe in providing accurate, relevant information to the public. None of that should sacrifice the tenets of ethical journalism. I pledge to uphold the
SPJ Code of Ethics.
create compelling video
Words are wonderful – they're the bread and butter of communication. But hearing, watching? That's the cream cheese on an everything bagel.
With professional experience delivering news in both TV and print/digital formats,
I know how to tell the same story in different ways.
I filmed high school football games for WNEP-TV's "Super 16" countdown, and I've edited news video for broadcast.
write conversationally
You've gotten this far – need I really say more?
I love writing in an authentic, true-to-me style when appropriate. Sir, yes, sir!
I can knock off the embellishments.
"Write like you talk," is a practice drilled into TV news producers and reporters. Clear, concise language is a tried-and-true way to get people to listen. I've written for print and broadcast, using natural syntax to keep readers engaged – no matter the story's format.
speak confidently
"C'mon, Katie. I've met you, and you seem so quiet."
Point of information! I'm a listener first. When I speak, I bring substance and conviction.
One of my former colleagues would say, "Still water runs deep." I think calm composure goes a long way, and maybe it's my secret weapon.
I competed in speech and debate during college, earning dozens of awards, including the best parliamentary debate speaker.
See how bright I can shine using the skills I honed during my competitive speech and debate career.
cut through the noise
Public policy can leave people feeling perplexed. Understanding how mountains of legislative text translate into real-life consequences is even more confusing. Have no fear – Katie is here!
I'm genuinely passionate about making government accessible to everyday folks. When decisions affect your day-to-day life, you shouldn't need to be an expert to know the impacts. My goal is to demystify what happens in governments and other powerful systems, like NGOs or corporations.
See how I tracked movement in York City Hall and made it digestible for readers.
find and interpret data
Data can be intimidating. But stories are hiding within all those numbers, just waiting to be discovered and told.
Some of my earliest memories involve me, age 4, playing around with calculators and teaching myself square roots.
Now, I'm enrolled in Ryan Mitchell's Python Essentials course – working toward a professional certificate from the Python Institute – to learn the programming language. Stay tuned for more data in my reporting to come!
